Fixing Asphalt Where It Breaks
Asphalt repair and patching is targeted work on the parts of a driveway or lot that have failed: potholes, areas broken into small alligator-skin pieces, sunken wheel paths, crumbling edges and old utility trenches. In Corvallis, most of these failures share one cause. Water got into the base during a long wet season, softened it, and traffic did the rest. A repair that lasts replaces that wet base.
Saw-cut patching
For a lasting repair, we saw-cut a clean rectangle around the failed area, remove the broken asphalt, dig out the wet or soft base, replace it with compacted crushed rock, tack the edges, and pave with hot mix compacted flush with the surrounding surface. HomeGuide lists saw-cut patches at about $4 to $12 per square foot, and hot patches at about $2 to $5.
Cold patch and emergency fixes
In the wet months, when hot-mix plants are often closed or the ground is saturated, a cold patch can make a pothole safe until spring. It is a temporary fix. We note those spots and come back for a permanent repair in dry weather.
Edge breakup
Driveway edges crumble when there is no shoulder support or when water soaks in alongside. We rebuild the edge with base rock, pave it back, and add a gravel shoulder or redirect the runoff that was causing it.
When patching is not enough
Angi puts asphalt patch repairs at roughly $2 to $5 per square foot, with individual patches $100 to $500 depending on method. When more than about a quarter to a third of a driveway is failing, an overlay or full replacement is usually better value, and we will tell you so.
Minimum charges
HomeGuide notes a typical minimum fee of about $100 to $250 for asphalt repairs because of setup and travel. If you have several small repairs, doing them together on one visit saves money.
Finding the water source
A repair that fails again in the same spot usually has a water problem nearby: a downspout dumping onto the pavement edge, a lawn sprinkler soaking the base, a clogged catch basin, or a low spot with no outlet. We look for the source and fix it along with the patch, often with a splash block, a short drain line or a regraded shoulder.
Infrared repairs
For surface defects on otherwise sound pavement, infrared repair heats the existing asphalt, mixes in new material and recompacts it, leaving no seam. HomeGuide lists infrared patches at about $2 to $6 per square foot. It is not a fix for base failure.

Asphalt Repair & Patching Questions
Why do potholes keep coming back in the same place?
Usually because the base under them is still wet and soft. A lasting repair cuts out the asphalt and replaces the base.
Can you patch potholes in winter?
We can make them safe with cold patch in wet weather, then return for a permanent hot-mix repair when it is dry.
Is patching cheaper than repaving?
For isolated failures, yes. When a large share of the surface is failing, an overlay or replacement is often better value.
What is alligator cracking?
A pattern of small interconnected cracks that usually signals base failure. It needs cutting out and base repair, not just sealing.
How long does a saw-cut patch last?
When the base underneath is rebuilt and water is kept away, a hot-mix patch can last as long as the pavement around it.
