Paving in Independence
Asphalt paving in Independence works around history and a river. Independence sits on the west bank of the Willamette in Polk County, just east of Monmouth, at about 171 feet. Thirty square blocks of its oldest streets make up the Independence Historic District, listed on the National Register, and many older homes there have narrow driveways and alley access.
Historic district driveways
Older lots often have tight access, mature trees and old concrete or gravel drives. We use smaller equipment, keep to the existing grade so water still drains away from old foundations, and match the look of the street.
River ground
The town flooded in December 1861, and Ash Creek flows through the city to the river. Low ground near the water can stay soft in winter. We check the subgrade and replace soft material before paving.
Hop town
Independence was known for hop growing from the 1890s through the 1940s and held a Hops Fiesta from the early 1930s to the mid-1950s. Some older farm properties around town still have long gravel lanes we can pave.
Growth
The city grew from 8,590 residents in 2010 to 9,828 in 2020, with 3,466 housing units; 55.5% of occupied homes were owner-occupied. Newer neighborhoods have driveways on valley soils that drain slowly.
Typical projects
- Replacing old driveways in the historic district
- Paving alley approaches
- New driveways in newer subdivisions
- Patching and sealing small commercial lots downtown
Timing
We pave in dry months and patch year-round.
Downtown businesses
Independence's historic downtown has small shops and restaurants with small lots and alleys. We patch, seal and restripe them in sections so businesses can stay open, and we schedule around events.
Gravel to asphalt
Some homes on the edges of town still have gravel drives. We check the rock depth, add and compact where needed, and pave.
