Paving in Halsey

Asphalt paving in Halsey is small-town and farm work. Halsey, in southern Linn County at about 289 feet, was founded in 1872 along the railroad and named for William L. Halsey of the Oregon & California Railroad. Its 180-foot grain elevator, built in 1955 to handle grass seed, stood over town until it was partly torn down in 2012.

Farm traffic

Grass seed farms around town run trucks and heavy equipment. Lanes, shop aprons and yards that carry them need a deep base and a thick asphalt section, and water has to drain off them on flat ground.

Small, owner-occupied town

Halsey had 962 residents in 2020 and 349 housing units; 75.2% of occupied homes were owner-occupied.

Rebuilt downtown

On July 31, 1903, a fire that started at a creamery destroyed most of downtown. Many lots were rebuilt afterward, and older driveways and alleys are due for replacement.

Typical projects

  • Farm lanes and shop aprons
  • Driveway replacement
  • Patching and crack sealing

Drainage on flat ground

On flat valley ground, water has nowhere to go unless we give it a slope and an outlet. We crown lanes, slope aprons away from buildings and add ditches or culverts.

Timing

We pave in dry months, usually late spring through early fall.

Crack sealing

Sealing cracks each late summer keeps winter water out of the base.

Gravel conversion

We check existing gravel, add and compact rock, then pave.
